We returned home around 11 last night from a weekend trip to visit Darrin's family and found a large snapping turtle camped out in our pachysandra. To make a long story short, by midnight we had two police cars and the animal control van parked out front.
The first officer, after taking pictures, was joined by a second officer who just wanted to see the escapee. I use that term because we discovered that animal control was called earlier in the week to pick up a snapping turtle in another part of our neighborhood but the turtle had escaped by the time animal control got there. They think this is the same turtle.
The most disturbing part of the night was probably when Darrin and the police officers were discussing whether animal control catching the turtle would be more like Crocodile Hunter or Swamp People. Then they started quoted Swamp People. (If you haven't seen Swamp People, you won't understand why that's so disturbing. Let me provide one quote for you: "I hate it when I shoot my son.")
Here's a photo of the turtle (hissing at the camera) as she's being carried away by animal control.
